Everything you need to know about ISO 50001:2018

ISO 50001:2018 specifies requirements for an Energy Management System (EnMS). It requires organisations to establish an energy baseline, set measurable objectives, implement action plans, and measure and verify results — creating an evidence-based approach to energy performance improvement. The standard covers all energy types across all in-scope activities, with particular attention to Significant Energy Uses (SEUs) — those consuming a major portion of energy or offering the greatest improvement potential. It integrates with ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001 through the shared High-Level Structure.

ISO 50001 applies to any energy-using organisation — manufacturing, transport, data centres, commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions, public authorities, and utilities. It is particularly valuable for energy-intensive industries where energy represents a significant share of operating costs, but it delivers value at any scale. Organisations responding to supply chain sustainability requirements increasingly find ISO 50001 certification provides credible, audited evidence of systematic energy management.

The Stage 2 audit assesses the comprehensiveness of the energy review, whether SEUs are correctly identified and under operational control, whether energy performance indicators (EnPIs) are meaningful and monitored, and whether action plans are progressing. Physical inspection of energy-using facilities and equipment is an important element. View the full certification process.

ISO 50001:2018 certificates are valid for three years. Surveillance audits assess progress against energy objectives and targets, EnPI trends, action plan status, and changes in significant energy uses. Year-on-year energy performance improvement — evidenced through data — is the clearest demonstration that the EnMS is functioning as intended. Recertification renews the certificate for a further three-year period.
